What is Pyrolysis Technology?
Pyrolysis is a chemical and thermal conversion process where organic materials are heated in a low-oxygen environment. Unlike incineration, no oxygen is involved, meaning the material transforms rather than combusts. The result is clean outputs: gases, oils, and char that can be utilised as usable energy.
HERU is the first system to apply pyrolysis safely and efficiently at the point of use — from the family home to hospitals, utilities, and businesses. Operating at low temperatures (up to 300 °C), HERU ensures safe, controlled, and clean conversion of everyday materials.
Key features:
- Low-temperature pyrolysis at up to 300 °C
- Safe, consistent, and clean operation
- Applicable to homes, NHS hospitals, utilities, businesses, and councils
Global data shows that less than 9% of plastic items are ever recycled, and our FOI investigation found that most UK local authorities cannot verify end-of-waste outcomes for the materials they collect. Mechanical recycling is limited by contamination, mixed polymers, and economic viability.
HERU™ applies controlled pyrolysis to recover energy and value from items previously considered unrecyclable — converting everyday materials into clean heat, validated through independent technical trials.
Ricardo Energy & Environment’s independent Life Cycle Assessment validated HERU as the world’s only positively rated pyrolysis technology.
